As more and more people visit our 50th state and fall in love with the more of us want to eat the native foods of Hawaii
Ancient Hawaiians were farmers, fishermen, hunters and gatherers who enjoyed a wide variety of foods. In this article I would like to give you some insight into the type of foods that are a part of the Hawaiian diet. Their main source of protein were fish, squid, limpet, crab and many other types pf seafood. They ate chicken and birds.When they were lucky they captured a wild pig or boar. But the sea played an important role in their diet. From an early age Hawaiians learned to fish. The main leafy vegetables for Hawaiian's were taro tops, and edible plants such as tree fern and fan palm. All of these ingredients were easily found on islands with good soil and great weather for plants to thrive. Fresh fruit was a staple in the Hawaiian diet, They ate bananas, coconuts, raspberries, strawberries, apples and sugar cane. Hawaiian seasonings came from kukui nut, seaweed, hoio fern, and salt. They preserved their foods with salt, but most foods were eaten fresh. Poi, is probably the most famous food of Hawaii. It is their starch staple. It is a glutinous purple paste made from pounded Taro root. It is a very nutritious carbohydrate. Beside for the health value attached to Poi there are many customs attached to the ceremony of eating it. |
